Sketchbook Sunday, Part The Sixth

Well, I promised to show my finished product once it was done, so here it is!

I'm certainly not as pleased with it as I was with the typography, but it did turn out better than I thought it would. Still not sure whether to make it public. Maybe.

Sketches under the jump!

I thought I'd show off some of my creature design. For some reason, these are always more detailed than my characters. I really show off my creepier side in these. Let's take a look!

This was part of an art challenge in last year's course, where we had to draw a creature that was made entirely out of one of the four elements. I chose water, and here you go! The entire thing is comprised of water and ice, and it uses that ring to channel a blast of water made up of it's own body. The ring is actually the creature, with the dragon part just a manipulation of the massive amount of water it controls. I wanted to call it a Hydrolisk, but that might cause confusion with the Starcraft people. Maybe a Liquirm?

Now we get into my sick creature ideas. This is a Maw, which inhabits a fantasy world I made up.  It disguises itself as a dead rabbit to lure scavengers, then chomps 'em. It actually sees through the "rabbit"'s eyes, and can raise them as a periscope in the long grass without blowing it's cover. I got the inspiration from the real life Gulper Eel, which looks even scarier than this.

Using the same idea, the faux (pronounced 'Foe') lulls it's prey into a false sense of security by disguising itself as a helpless looking fox. Then the jaws come out. This one was inspired by the dragonfly nymph, which really does have jaws like that. I liked the idea of having a world where there was this kind of 'meta-predator', creatures that prey on other carnivores by disguising themselves as the prey. And now you will never look at me the same again.

Movie of the day: The Adventures Of Tintin. I'm finding a surprising amount of people who actually didn't dig this movie, I don't really know why. To me, it was just good old fashioned fun that kept the relentless pace of the comics and was a breath of fresh air in amongst all the dark 'n' gritty actioners out there. I especially like how Spielberg realised that working with CG meant he could do some seriously impossible-to-film action scenes, so he did it in spades. The naval battle and the one-shot motorcycle chase are just breathtaking.

Song of the day: The General by Dispatch. Good old fashioned fun music. I like it when a song can grab your attention right off the bat with it's narrative rather than it's melody, and do it fast. The beat's pretty cool too.

Hey Suede. I heard you like mash-ups, so I thought I'd share one with you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgRPKpVikdw This and a few others are done by someone named HellboundDochi.

:D I love the song you used in your project, and I think it looked pretty cool. But as I've said before, I'm no expert on the visual arts.
